“Yeah, I’m fine thanks”
That old chestnut. We all say it. How often do you say it and not really mean it? Or maybe just simply don’t know what to say instead. How to word how you actually are. You certainly aren’t alone. Sometimes, it just seems the easiest response.
However, as I checked my website analytics from the last 30 days, it struck me that nearly 60% of visitors to my website are men (I have no idea how it knows this, but it’s true!) so there are many of you that are not feeling “fine” at the moment and maybe it’s about time you took some action.
I wanted to talk to you about why Chanya courses are PERFECT for men and why they are so successful in completing the courses, overcome their symptoms of mental health struggles and enjoy the process too!
When it comes to men’s mental health I don’t think we know the reality, but the data we do have is frankly, worrying and things are only getting worse during the Covid pandemic.
At least 1 in 8 men have symptoms of mental health issues.
Suicide is the biggest cause of death in men under 50 in the UK
75% of all UK suicides are by men.
73% of adults that go missing are men.
As my website analytics show, and the same is reflected in the reality, men are reluctant to seek help!
Well, there are a whole host of reasons.
According to a recent survey, 78% of men asked said that it’s okay to admit that you are not okay, yet 41% of men don’t seek support when they need it.
Again, I suspect the true number is much higher but it is difficult to ascertain the real statistics, as many men do not discuss the types of symptoms relating to mental health issues such as anxiety, stress and depression.
It is often the physical symptoms that lead them to seek help. This could be anything from migraines, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), teeth grinding, impotence, insomnia and other gastrointestinal issues such as ulcers, heartburn and indigestion.
But some of the most common reasons for NOT getting help are exactly the reason why Chanya could be the answer you are looking for…
Many men have the idea that ‘getting help’ means sitting on a couch, talking about your deepest darkest feelings, dragging up memories from your past, crying and getting emotional while someone in a suit sits with a clipboard on their knee asking questions and nodding as they scribble furious notes.
The truth of the matter is that there are so many different forms of help and many therapies do involve talking about events and emotions.
Chanya courses are not. It’s NOT therapy.
It is a psycho-educational training course. What does that mean? It means that it is all about learning. Learning how your brain works, where thoughts and feelings come from, why it is predictable that you feel the way that you do and you are given the practical tools to change these patterns.
It is not about ‘learning to cope’. It is not about medication. It’s not about anything airy, fairy. It’s scientific, it’s evidence-based, it’s logical.
So maybe you have been talked into seeking help before or you have tried talking to a friend or family member and it didn’t go the way you hoped. It is possible that you found the experience difficult, uncomfortable or embarrassing and potentially made you feel even worse and then like there is little point trying again.
This can be enough to put anyone off seeking further help as it can make you believe that it’s obviously just not for you!
Chanya courses aren’t about having to explain the feelings you have or where you think they come from. The course explains where any emotion or feelings come from and how to change the process
Lots of men (and women) believe that they feel the way that they do because it is just part of who they are or because of something that has happened to them. This is not entirely true. The way you think and feel is not hard-wired, it is not part of your personality. It is a habit. You feel the way you do because you think the way you do. It’s utterly predictable.
Once you understand how your brain works and where things are going wrong for you in terms of your thinking patterns, you can be shown how to change them! This is simply a new skill to be learnt and once you’ve learnt it, you will feel differently.
The things that I teach are not just fluffy ‘woo woo’ ideas. It is not all about positivity and happy clappy. That’s not real life.
I teach you about reality, fact and science based psychology. Where thoughts come from, the process everyone’s brain goes through, how our thinking impacts feeling and how to change neurological pathways to create new, more helpful habits.
I tell you about studies that have been done, I talk you through important research that backs up WHY you are thinking and feeling the way you are and I teach you the skills you need to overcome your symptoms for good.
Chanya courses are logical, practical and factual.
Honestly! I haven’t had a single client yet who has not enjoyed the process. It is fascinating to learn about the inner workings of your mind. It’s interesting to understand and recognise thinking habits in yourself (and sometimes even more entertaining to see them in others!). It’s simple to practise the new skills you need to change.
There is online support to back up your learning and give you deeper insight. There are simple tasks and things to think about as you go through the courses. And because it is only a few weeks, it is mind blowing to see how you are changing every single week!
So come on, what have you got to lose? If you are already feeling unhappy enough to be browsing through your options, what have you got to lose by sending an email or picking up the phone to find out a little more?
Just think, in 3-7 weeks, you might not ever have to feel this way again! You might understand how to stop creating these thoughts and feelings and see a more helpful perspective on life! Who wouldn’t want that?
I offer a free 30-minute relaxed a friendly chat either over the phone or via zoom. I also offer sessions online or ‘walk and talk’ sessions are popular too. It’s good to get out in the fresh air, especially with all the current lockdown restrictions.
So let’s get 2021 off to a better start with you feeling more in control, more positive and much happier.
