One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to mental health symptoms such as anxiety, depression or low self-esteem – is that they are an inherent part of a person. That it is something to do with who they are, their personality, their genetics, their wiring.
This is not the case.
This belief is what causes many people not to take action, or often not even realise that they are struggling! Because of this many people suffer in silence or believe that there is no way out of their thoughts and feelings, other than to take medication or learn to ‘cope’ and try to carry on.
The reality is very different. We have an increasing understanding of mental health and how the brain works and how it processes life to impact our feelings and behaviours.
It means that actually, mental health is much more predictable than we previously thought! This is great news because it means that there is nothing broken, nothing that is unfixable and nothing that can’t be changed with a bit of learning, practise and effort.
What it means is that just like physical health, mental health can be improved, learned and built on.
If you are overweight and unfit and you want to change that, you would seek a lifestyle change or personal trainer. They could educate and support you on how to eat better, what exercises to practise and what to recognise so that you can put these things into practise to achieve your goals, fitness levels and healthier weight.
Mental health is the same!
If you want to change it you can, but you probably need to learn how, some new skills to practise and know the things to recognise to stop you slipping back into old habits.
It is utterly predictable and anyone can.
Mental health symptoms are something that can be constant or they can be better and worse, or they can come and go. We all have good days, bad days and periods where we feel out of control. This is all mental health.
They are something that we create. This doesn’t mean that we do this knowingly or willingly, just like people who are unfit probably didn’t ever intend to be so. But our habits, the things we have learned and our experiences and how we process them have led to our current state of mental health.
There is no denying that antidepressants do their job. But they do not solve the problem. Many people take medication for a sustained period of time, but they are not ‘cured’ of their symptoms. Medication pumps extra serotonin (happy hormones) into your body but if the root cause isn’t changed, then ultimately, symptoms are likely to continue but they may help you to cope on a day to day basis.
Yep. Whether you have struggled for decades or whether the current circumstances and lockdown have brought struggles like a tidal wave. You can learn to have great mental health
Just like getting fit, it’s all well and good being told and shown what to do to get there. But if in between your personal training sessions you eat rubbish and don’t exercise you are not going to achieve your goals. Achieving great mental health is the same. Think of it as building mental fitness. You need to learn how and most importantly, you need to put it into action!
The great news is that as long as you are prepared to put in the effort, not very long at all!
Most people need between 3-7 sessions and they can be online or during ‘walk and talk’ sessions.
The best way to describe what I do is to think of me as your mental health personal trainer. We won’t be doing therapy, we won’t be talking about your past of your feelings. I will teach you how what you are putting in mentally is creating what you get out emotionally. I can show you what to practise and how that will build new patterns and habits. I will support you, guide you and be there to answer questions and explain things along the way.
Make today the time to find out more. If you could feel happier, more relaxed, control your thoughts and feelings, less stressed, less worried about things or be able to find a brighter side then get in touch.
I offer a free, relaxed 30-minute chat either on the phone or online and I’d be happy to hear from you.
